FlexiSpaces serve as havens within schools, offering specialised support to students encountering difficulties in traditional learning environments. These spaces aim to keep students engaged with their education while fostering a sense of belonging within their school community.

The initiative, backed by a $45 million investment from the state government, targets various student groups, including those regularly absent from school, individuals with learning barriers, and children coping with mental health issues.

With the expansion of the program, more schools across Queensland are set to benefit from tailored interventions designed to re-engage students and provide them with the support they need to succeed academically and emotionally.

Already implemented in 52 state schools, FlexiSpaces reimagine traditional classrooms, incorporating elements such as bean bags, specialist educators, and modular layouts to accommodate diverse learning needs.

By offering a flexible learning environment, these spaces empower educators to employ innovative teaching methods and provide personalised support to students, ultimately enhancing their educational experience.

Education Minister Di Farmer underscores the importance of early intervention through FlexiSpaces, emphasising the program’s role in nurturing students’ holistic development.

“FlexiSpaces are such a great tool to help schools respond to students who are experiencing challenges in a mainstream educational environment,” she stated.

“Early intervention is so critical, which is why we are trialling FlexiSpaces in primary schools for the first time.

“They allow the students to remain close to their school friends, maintain a regular school routine, continue to be a part of their school community and continue their schooling with an uninterrupted curriculum.

Strathpine Set to Shine as North Brisbane’s Family Entertainment Hub

Brisbane’s northside is poised for a major transformation with the announcement of a sprawling $70-million development in Strathpine.

This exciting project promises to become the ultimate entertainment destination for families, boasting a range of attractions unlike anything seen before in the region.

Area 51, known for having Australia’s largest indoor family entertainment complex in Underwood, will run a massive play centre that will serve as the development’s focal point. This sprawling 6,000-square-metre space will offer boundless fun for children of all ages.

Thrill-seekers won’t be disappointed either. A multi-level go-kart track, meticulously designed by world-leading Slovenian specialists 360 Karting, will be a unique addition to Brisbane’s entertainment landscape. Adrenaline-pumping races across three levels are sure to provide an exhilarating experience for both seasoned racers and curious newcomers.

The award-winning Comiskey Group’s development is not just for kids. The 3,500-square-metre hotel will cater to adults as well, featuring two restaurants, an arcade, eight bowling lanes, and an American-style sports bar. This creates a complete entertainment package for families, allowing parents to unwind while their children indulge in the play centre and go-kart track.

Adding to the diverse offerings, a dedicated food precinct will be established, with Guzman y Gomez already confirmed as a prominent tenant. This ensures a range of delicious dining options for visitors throughout the day.

“We wanted to create something truly unique,” said Rob Comiskey, director of the Comiskey Group.

The three-level go-kart track, which experts from Slovenia designed, is something Brisbane has never seen before, and the play centre will be the biggest on the northside.

This project goes beyond mere entertainment. Mr. Comiskey emphasises the development’s role in addressing the northside’s lack of family-oriented attractions.

“There’s a significant gap compared to the southside,” he acknowledges. “We’re thrilled to be creating a destination that draws families from across the entire north Brisbane region.”

The hotel itself will pay homage to Strathpine’s history. “The Country Club Hotel” moniker is a nod to a well-known establishment that once stood in the area.

“It was a local landmark,” Mr. Comiskey reminisces. “By reviving this name, we hope to honour Strathpine’s past while creating a vibrant new chapter for its future.”

Construction is slated to begin later this year, generating a substantial number of jobs. The project is estimated to create a total of 476 positions, including both permanent roles and opportunities during the construction phase.

This development promises to breathe new life into Strathpine, transforming it into a vibrant entertainment hub for families across Brisbane’s northside. With its unique combination of attractions, dining options, and historical connection, the Country Club Hotel precinct is poised to become a landmark destination.

Alice Cooper Rocks Brisbane Bar with Surprise Midnight Gig After Eatons Hill and Gold Coast Shows

American rock icon Alice Cooper, 76, performed before a stunned audience at a secret midnight gig at Alice Bar in Brisbane, after performances in Eatons Hill and the Gold Coast, capping off his headlining act at the Pandemonium Rocks festival in spectacular fashion.

After captivating audiences at the Pandemonium Rocks festival on the 4th of May 2024– alongside legendary acts like Blondie, Cooper and his band, affectionately known as the Goon Squad – treated a lucky crowd to a spontaneous set at the intimate Brisbane bar.

The American rocker, who has been touring Australia since early April with shows in Melbourne, Sydney, the Gold Coast, and Brisbane’s Eatons Hill, took to Instagram to re-share a clip from the night, performing his 1994 hit “Lost In America.”

The surprise gig came amidst challenges faced by the Pandemonium Rocks festival. Earlier this month, six acts, including international headliners Placebo, Deep Purple, and US band Dead Kennedys, were scrapped from the lineup.

The festival’s multi-stage layout was also condensed into one stage, and several dates were relocated. In response, general admission tickets were slashed from around $285 to $190, whilst VIP tickets were reduced from $830 to $650.

Pandemonium Rocks’ decision not to offer full refunds to ticketholders sparked outrage among fans. Instead, attendees were offered one complimentary GA ticket per full-priced ticket purchased, a partial refund of $70, or an “exclusive Pandemonium hoodie valued at $100.” Fans took to social media to voice their disapproval over the lack of a full refund option.

Last month, the festival faced cancellation fears after a string of Australian festivals were axed. However, organisers reassured fans that the festival would proceed with “some changes,” before officially confirming the lineup alterations.

Albany Creek Man Stunned by $200,000 Windfall

An Albany Creek resident is still coming to terms with his good fortune after discovering he won a life-changing sum of $200,000.

Prior to receiving a call from officials, the Queenslander who held the winning ticket for draw 1663 on the 22nd of April 2024 was completely unaware of his prize. The unexpected news left him speechless.

Plans for the windfall remain undecided. The lucky winner admitted that he hadn’t had time to think about how he would use the money because the news had caught him off guard.

“He was understandably overwhelmed,” the spokesperson from TheLott said. “After thanking us, he admitted he was too stunned to say much. His wife, who was with him, was equally surprised.”

“Travelling is on the agenda, though,” the spokesperson added. “He mentioned they were already planning a trip around Australia, and this win might allow them to splurge a bit during their travels.”

The winning ticket, featuring four randomly chosen numbers, was purchased through the app via Australia’s official lottery platform.

Locals Question Extended School Zone on Road Serving Two Albany Creek Schools

Local residents have railed against plans for a new 770m-long school zone that will be installed over an already-congested stretch of road in Albany Creek.

Read: Works Commence on New Speed Limit Zones at Two Albany Creek Schools

The school zone with a 40km/h speed limit is being installed on Old Northern Road outside Albany Hills State School and Albany Creek State High School.

The zone will stretch from north of the intersection with Jinker Track all the way to south of the Folkstone Avenue intersection. Officials decided on an uninterrupted school zone for this stretch of road because the two schools are in very close proximity to each other.

The aim of this unified school zone is to enhance safety for students and residents alike who need to travel to and from the school campuses.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads stated that the installation of the continuous school zone was due to the short separation between the two schools. They claimed it would improve safety for students and the general community, with active flashing lights operating from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on school days.

However, the decision has attracted strong reaction from some locals who questioned the need for the extended zone. They pointed out that barriers on the side of Old Northern Road heading towards Brisbane block students from crossing, while traffic lights with crossings are already in place near both schools.

One long-time resident, who has lived in the area for nearly 30 years and seen traffic congestion increase significantly over that period, said people are going to get angry because they can’t get to work on time, and questioned what the expanded zone would achieve.

The Department spokeswoman stated that their review highlighted the need for the school zone, which was prompted by community requests and a change to their school zone policy. While acknowledging congestion concerns, she claimed the school zone would have minimal impact on travel times, stating that safety is their highest priority.

The much-anticipated Pandemonium Tour will proceed with notable changes to its line-up and venue, including a significant move of its Brisbane show to Eatons Hill, dispelling widespread cancellation rumours and presenting a reshaped musical showcase.

Australia’s rock music enthusiasts can breathe a sigh of relief as the Pandemonium Tour, set to commence in Melbourne on the 20th of April 2024, has been confirmed to go ahead with alterations previously announced. Amidst unverified media reports suggesting the event’s cancellation, the tour’s organisers, alongside headliners Alice Cooper and Blondie, have clarified that the festival is set to rock the nation with a revised artist roster and venue adjustments.

The festival will feature Alice Cooper, Blondie, The Psychedelic Furs, Wheatus, Wolfmother, Palaye Royale, and Cosmic Psychos, despite the withdrawal of Deep Purple, Placebo, and several other acts. Notably, the Gold Coast event has been relocated to Broadwater Parklands, and the Sunshine Coast’s concert is now slated for Brisbane at Eatons Hill Hotel, reflecting the organisers’ adaptability in the face of logistical challenges.

In light of the alterations, festival-goers have been presented with three compensation options: a complimentary additional ticket, a partial refund, or a Pandemonium hoodie, with ticket prices adjusted to $190 for all shows except Brisbane, now priced at $165 plus fees.

While some attendees have expressed frustration over the changes, others remain excited, highlighting the polarised sentiment surrounding the restructuring of the event.

Works Commence on New Speed Limit Zones at Two Albany Creek Schools

Did you know that Albany Hills State School and Albany Creek State High School are set to receive a major safety boost, as works commence to install a new 40 km/hr speed limit zone outside the two schools?

Read: Albany Creek High School Students Raise Funds for Homeless Youth Accommodation Program

The new 40km/hr school zone will cover a 770-metre stretch, extending from just north of Jinker Track to just south of Folkstone Avenue. It will feature active flashing lights to alert drivers to the lower speed limit.

School speed limit zones are put in place to slow down traffic near schools during the hours when students are arriving and leaving. These zones are marked by signage that indicates the reduced speed limit and the specific time periods it is in effect.

The decision reflects the close physical proximity of the two educational institutions and underscores the perceived need for enhanced security measures in the shared vicinity.

This reduced speed limit zone will be in effect during peak school hours, operating from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on school days.

As schools reopen for Term 2, motorists must exercise vigilance and caution when driving through school zones, being mindful of the reduced speed limits intended to create a safer environment for students, and obeying all parking and loading restrictions in these areas.
