The Strathpine Donor Centre is calling for 100 O-type blood donors as part of a broader national appeal to address critically low blood supplies.
Strathpine Centre Seeks Urgent Blood Donations
The Strathpine Donor Centre has been identified as needing 100 O-type blood donors this week. Australian Red Cross Lifeblood urges 9,500 donors nationwide to step forward. The request forms part of a coordinated response across donor centres in Brisbane, including Brisbane City, Chermside and Springwood.

National Blood Supply at Critical Levels
Lifeblood has reported that levels of both O-positive and O-negative blood have dropped to their lowest point since October 2023. The demand follows an increase in appointment cancellations and rescheduled appointments. This puts pressure on national supply chains.
Across Queensland, 2,000 O-type donations are needed in the next seven days to meet patient needs. Brisbane City requires 250 donors, Springwood 200, Chermside 150, and Strathpine 100.

Why O-Type Blood Is Critical
O-negative blood is classified as the universal donor type. This blood type is suitable for emergency transfusions when the patient’s blood type is unknown or cannot be determined. It is commonly stocked in ambulances and rescue helicopters due to its versatility.
Only about seven per cent of Australians have O-negative blood. It accounts for 16 per cent of blood issued to hospitals. O-positive blood is held by around 40 per cent of Australians. It is also vital for emergency use and general supply.

How Donations Make a Difference
Each blood donation can potentially save up to three lives. The donated blood is typically separated into red cells, plasma, and platelets. These aid patients with cancer, anaemia, organ surgeries, and trauma-related injuries.
Red blood cells have a shelf life of just 42 days, meaning regular donations are essential to maintaining the supply. A single donation is around 470ml. It is about eight per cent of an adult’s blood volume—and takes roughly 10 minutes, although the full appointment lasts about an hour.
