$50-Million Development to Bring Huge Play Centre to Strathpine

Family fun just got bigger, as in 6000-sqm bigger, in Strathpine! A giant indoor play centre is set to open as part of a $50-million development at the Country Club Hotel on Gympie Road, just across from Pine Rivers Park.

The expansive play area will feature diverse attractions, including climbing walls, a trampoline park, a high ropes course, a ninja park, multi-storey playgrounds, giant inflatables, mega slides, and sports courts. This new venue will join Area 51’s existing centre in Underwood and a smaller site scheduled to open on Anzac Avenue, Redcliffe, in February next year. The company also plans further expansion with new locations for Mount Gravatt in January and Bundamba next November.

Area 51’s Operations Manager, Michael Affleck, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with the Comiskey Group. He explained that the company was pleased to work with such a well-regarded organisation and felt confident that the collaboration aligned with Area 51’s goals for innovative growth. He also noted a perceived lack of diverse entertainment options in the Moreton Bay region, which the new centre aims to address.

The development in Strathpine reflects a growing trend of indoor play centres with accompanying cafes opening in the Moreton Bay region. Demographics Group co-founder and research director Simon Kuestenmacher, observed that this area is experiencing significant growth, suggesting that more such facilities are likely. He explained that these centres cater to modern family needs, allowing parents to relax or work remotely in the café while their children play in a safe environment.

Mr Kuestenmacher connected the increasing popularity of indoor entertainment venues to changes in urban planning and lifestyle. He explained that children historically played in backyards, streets, and parks. Still, smaller residential blocks, reduced backyard space, fewer play areas, and parental safety concerns have led to a demand for alternative play options.

Other businesses have also invested in this trend. Jungle Adventure Play added a $20 million centre at North Lakes to its existing Tingalpa location. Bounce Morayfield launched an “adrenaline playground” off Morayfield Road in June 2023, adding to its Bounce centre in Tingalpa.

Existing venues include Chipmunks Indoor Playground at North Lakes and Morayfield, Lollipops Adventure Playground in Strathpine, and Revolution Sports Park in North Lakes.

Experience ‘Brother Sister’ Live: The Brand New Heavies’ Tour in Eatons Hill

Celebrate 30 years of “Brother Sister” with The Brand New Heavies’ 2025 Australian tour. Live performances, timeless hits, and jazz-funk grooves await in Eatons Hill!

The Brand New Heavies, pioneers of the acid jazz movement of the 1990s, are returning to Australia in February 2025 to play shows to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their seminal album, “Brother Sister.”

Released in 1994, Brother Sister was a seminal moment in the band’s career, driven by timelessness through singles like “Dream On Dreamer,” “Midnight At The Oasis,” and “Back To Love.” The album had huge success, peaking at number four on the UK charts, selling more than one million copies, and receiving a BRIT Award nomination.

The ‘Brother Sister 30’ Tour will be the first Australian tour to feature original members Andrew Levy and Simon Bartholomew with acclaimed vocalist Angela Ricci. Audiences can expect a full live band performance of the “Brother Sister” album, supported by other hits and fan favourites from their extensive catalogue.

The tour schedule is as follows:

  • Thursday, 13 February 2025: Eatons Hill Hotel, Brisbane
  • Friday, 14 February 2025: Enmore Theatre, Sydney
  • Saturday, 15 February 2025: Hamer Hall, Melbourne
  • Monday, 17 February 2025: Astor Theatre, Perth

Reflecting on the milestone, the band expressed their enthusiasm: “We can’t believe that ‘Brother Sister’ is going to be 30 years young! What better way to celebrate than coming to see us play the album in its entirety and all our hits.” Their excitement is palpable, and they can’t wait to share this special moment with their fans.

Since its birth in 1990, The Brand New Heavies have brought sophisticated ’70s funk grooves to modern ears, lit up dance floors, and inspired fans worldwide. Success with Brother Sister was followed by the platinum-certified Shelter album, which includes such hits as “Sometimes,” “You Are The Universe,” and their cover of “You’ve Got A Friend.” The band’s enduring legacy shines brightly through powerful releases, including 2019’s TBNH, which celebrated a new chapter with the talented Angela Ricci.

Eatons Hill Community Rallies Around “Emily’s Tree” to Bring Joy to Sick Children

The Eatons Hill community is again coming together to support “Emily’s Tree,” a toy drive at Whisk & Grind Cafe that honours the memory of five-year-old Emily Borg and brings joy to children at the Queensland Children’s Hospital.

Emily’s Legacy

Emily Borg was a beloved member of the Eatons Hill community who tragically passed away from neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer, in 2023.  After her diagnosis, Emily underwent intensive treatment, including chemotherapy and surgery. Despite the medical team’s efforts, she developed a rare infection following a bone marrow transplant. Emily’s mother, Emma Cantrell, shared that Emily passed away peacefully, surrounded by love.

To honour her memory and continue her spirit of kindness, Emily’s family started “Emily’s Tree” at Whisk & Grind Cafe at 6 Bunya Park Drive, Eatons Hill.

A Community Effort

Last year, the community donated thousands of gifts to “Emily’s Tree,” filling the toy cupboard at the Queensland Children’s Hospital and providing monthly deliveries throughout the year. Emily’s family was overwhelmed by its generosity and positive impact on the children and their families. This year, they hope to continue this tradition of giving.

They are asking for brand-new toys to ensure the safety of the hospital children. The cafe will also list suggested toys based on the children’s interests.

How to Donate

Anyone wishing to donate can drop off new toys at Whisk & Grind Cafe during business hours. All donations will be delivered to the Queensland Children’s Hospital on 18 December.

Warner Family Devastated After Losing $40,000 House Deposit in Email Scam

A Warner family’s dream of homeownership has turned into a nightmare after they fell victim to a sophisticated email scam and lost their entire $40,000 house deposit.

Christine and David Rose, along with their four children, were just days away from settling on their first home together when they were targeted by cyber criminals who infiltrated an email chain between the couple and their conveyancing lawyer.

The Roses believed that a routine email requesting the final deposit instalment was from their lawyer.  The fraudulent emails were highly convincing, featuring authentic-looking signatures and letterheads, and originated from what appeared to be the lawyer’s legitimate email address.  Unaware of the deception, Mrs. Rose transferred the $40,000, believing she was completing the final step in their home-buying journey.

Just days later, the family realised they had been scammed. “It is gut-wrenching,” Mrs Rose said, highlighting the seven years of savings and hard work to secure their first home together. The situation is particularly stressful as their current rental property is for sale, with their lease set to expire in three weeks. The ongoing open homes and uncertainty surrounding their living situation have affected the entire family.

The incident has left the Roses feeling deeply vulnerable and shaken.  Mrs Rose described the violation of having their private financial affairs exploited and expressed her newfound anxiety about online security.  She warned that this type of scam could happen to anyone.

Despite the setback, the family is determined to purchase their home.  They have reported the crime to their bank, the scammer’s bank, and the Queensland Police Cyber Crime Department.  While the bank has only recovered $3,000, the Roses have secured a loan to cover the lost deposit, albeit with significant financial implications for their future.  They have also launched a fundraising page to help alleviate the burden caused by this ordeal.

This incident is a stark reminder of the increasing sophistication of online scams and the importance of vigilance in online communication.  Even seemingly secure email exchanges can be compromised, highlighting the need for individuals to verify information through multiple channels before making significant financial transactions.

Woman in Ceiling Forces Temporary Closure of Albany Creek Tavern

Albany Creek Tavern at Albany Creek was forced to do a temporary closure on Friday, 6 December 2024, after a woman climbed into the roof cavity.

Emergency services were called to the pub at 4:30 PM. Police located a 48-year-old woman who had entered through a manhole in the building’s ceiling and initially refused to come down.

At approximately 5:00 PM, the pub was evacuated due to power disconnection. Police negotiated with the woman, who ultimately climbed down at around 6:50 PM.
