As part of Book Week festivities across Moreton Bay, children’s author Samantha Wheeler will visit Albany Creek Library on 28 August, giving local school students the chance to explore storytelling and take part in writing activities.

The visit is part of City of Moreton Bay Libraries’ Children’s Book Week program, which runs from Saturday 22 August to Friday 28 August. Ms Wheeler will also visit Arana Hills Library on 26 August, where she will work with local school students and lead activities focused on storytelling and writing.
A library full of popular stories
The celebrations come as City of Moreton Bay Libraries reveal a list of books that proved popular with young readers during the last financial year.
The list features a mix of classics and newer adventures. Lynley Dodd’s Hairy Maclary and Schnitzel Von Krumm Forget-me-not are among the popular titles, alongside Tui Sutherland’s Wings of Fire series.
The list also includes Anh Do’s Hot Dog! Scary Time! and David Melling’s Hugless Douglas, while The Baby-Sitters Club is capturing a new generation of readers.
Animals and fantasy fiction feature strongly among the popular titles, giving young readers a range of stories to explore. For families, Book Week can be a chance to let children choose what catches their attention. Sometimes that means returning to a familiar favourite. Other times, it can mean discovering a story they have never read before.
From readers to storytellers
Ms Wheeler’s Albany Creek visit will give students an opportunity to explore storytelling and writing. At Albany Creek, Ms Wheeler will lead writing activities designed to spark creativity, build confidence and foster a lifelong love of reading.
For students, the session offers a chance to see how stories can inspire ideas and how writing can become a creative outlet of its own.
Dressing up, borrowing books, and reading more
There is another reason for children to make a trip to their local library during Book Week. Through the Dress Up for Read Up campaign, children who sign up to ReadUp, or show they are already members, and borrow a book during Book Week can receive a special Book Week sticker and a small ReadUp pack.
Children are also being encouraged to dress as their favourite book characters, bringing some of the imagination found on the page into the library itself.
The celebrations extend beyond the author visits, with City of Moreton Bay officials also taking part in Storytime sessions featuring selected Children’s Book Week Australia shortlisted books.

With Book Week bringing authors, costumes and creative activities into local libraries, finding the next page may be the easiest part.
